The price wars in the small car segment in India sure has some benefits for the consumer. After the recent news of price hike on all cars made by India’s largest car makers, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, it seems that the auto giant has finally decided to appease the consumer.

Maruti is all set to revamp the Maruti Alto. Just as the Maruti Zen got a complete makeover in the 2006, Alto will also be becoming lighter and therefore cheaper. Alto, which replaced Maruti 800 as the country’s largest selling small car, is ready to be stripped into a lighter version, or so Maruti feels. The car, which was already selling at 20,000 vehicles per month, all over India, is now believed to be selling even more. This is because with the stripping of the car, the price also becomes extremely light on the pocket.

The Alto will not only become leaner, but will also now be giving tough competition to Nano. Alto is also believed to be the perfect replacement to the nation’s most popular car ever – the Maruti 800, which is now going to be slowly phased out from the market. The K series engine, which is already working extremely well with the Maruti Swift, will now also be used in the Maruti Alto. This brings the price of the Maruti Alto down by almost Rs. 50,000. The new price of the car will be something around Rs. 2 Lakh.

This move has been made to make the prices of Alto comparable to that of Maturi 800. Meanwhile, the company will keep trying to come up with ways to make the car even more affordable. This new model of Maruti Alto will soon be in showrooms. While there will be many changes in the engine and the general materials used to make the car, the looks and the design of the car will remain largely the same.Since Alto is already selling well, there wouldn’t be much benefit in changing its looks.

As the company busies itself with improving the Alto and bringing its cost down, it is also planning to refresh the Wagon R too. Before the end of April, a decision is expected on the Wagon R also.
