November 2015 Refresh: Ertiga had first mover advantage due to which it enjoyed market supremacy for long. The competition is catching up with models introduced both above and below the price of Ertiga. In order to compete with the new entrants, Maruti is coming up with a refresh of its MPV. The refresh would primarily be in the form of equipment and SHVC which is a mild hybrid technology.

The front grille is widened and made thicker which flows right up to the headlamp. Fog lamp is refreshed too and air dams on bumper are reduced in size. The sides are untouched.

The driver side airbags is standard in “L” variant and L(O) variant gets dual front airbags with EBD and ABS. The new refreshed Ertiga gets new audio system that has USB connectivity and Bluetooth. Other new features are, steering mounted audio control, wing mirrors with turn indicator, AC for 2nd row, powered mirrors. The z variant gets new wheel caps, defogger on rear wiper. Four speed automatic gearbox is introduced in VXi variant. All others will have five speed manual gearbox. Gear shift indicator is introduced in diesel variants which would be displayed on multi-info display panel.

Multipurpose vehicles are used to move people as well as stuff from one destination to another. But most of the MPVs are big and they occupy a lot of space on road. This is where Ertiga scores its first point over others. Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is spacious and compact at the same time. This multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) was launched in April 2012. After its launch, the car maker managed to sell around 7000 units per month until December 2012. Let’s take a look at some points to know more about this MPV.

    Engine

Petrol version is powered by 1.4-liter engine, and diesel version is fitted with 1.3-liter turbo. Both engines are matted with five speed manual transmission gearbox. Ertiga is one step ahead of its competitors, thanks to its dual fuel (CNG) models that are available in certain cities.

Petrol engine offers mileage of 16.2 KMPL, Diesel offers 20.77 KMPL. While driving on CNG, you can expect mileage of 22.80 KMPL. Both engines roar normally even when they are stretched till their limit. According to the car maker, diesel engine can reach 100 KMPH in 13.9 seconds. The petrol can do the same in 12.1 seconds. Fuel tank capacity in both versions is 45 liters.

    Exterior

Ertiga is MPV, but offers car like performance, thanks to its light weight monocoque chassis. Its electronic power steering allows drivers to control this MPV comfortably even while transporting heavy loads.

Ertiga’s 15-inch wheels appear small, but work perfectly. Disk brake in the front and drum brake in the rear wheels are good enough to control this MPV. MacPherson Strut system manages front suspension, and Torsion beam manages rear suspension.

    Interior

Ertiga’s bonnet, grille, and swept back headlamps might remind you about Maruti’s hatchbacks like Ritz and Swift. This MPV’s rear side design is similar to that of other vans. Its big doors keep it one step ahead of all the competitors, as passengers can easily get in and out of the vehicle.

As far as seats are concerned, front ones are comfortable. Surprisingly, even the second row and last row seats are soft and comfortable. Some users have pointed out that they feel uncomfortable while using its third row, as seats in second row do not tumble down. But the overall comfort level offered in second and third row is better compared to other MPVs. There is decent leg space for all the passengers. Plus, dedicated AC vents make sure that no one sweats.

Boot space in this MPV is 185 liters. However, creating excess luggage space is simple; all that you need to do is fold the third row. This will increase Ertiga’s boot space to 785 liters.

Six ways adjustable driver’s seat, and tilt steering makes sure that the driver feels relaxed while driving through those busy city roads. Meter cluster is simple and easy to understand. White van drivers will definitely love to spin this MPV around in city traffic. User reviews suggest that petrol version users are much more satisfied than diesel version users.

Music system with 4 speakers is good enough. You can listen to radio, CDs, and songs from your USB as well. Maruti Suzuki has also taken care of small needs with bottle holders, compartments, rear and front door pockets, and second row arm rest.

    Safety

Ertiga is loaded with safety features like anti-lock braking system (with brake assist), world class seat-belts for all rows, SRS dual front seat airbags, anti-theft security alarm system, and immobilizer. Outside mirrors are electronically adjustable.

    Competition

Ertiga is often compared with Honda’s Mobilio, Toyota Innova, and Mahindra Xylo. Ertiga’s third row offers much more under-thigh support and good sitting position compared to other MPVs. Maruti Suzuki designed dashboard also looks better than the one designed by Honda.

Ertiga offers more interior features, and better fuel efficiency than its competitors, but its storage space is small compared to others in this segment. Ertiga comes with price tag of around Rs 6 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh, which is less than all the competitors. Price may differ, depending on the variant, and all the applicable taxes.

News reports suggest that Maruti is developing Ertiga’s facelift version, and the car maker might launch it sometime this year.
