    yamaha ray
Ray is Yamaha Motor India’s first scooter for Indian market. It was launched in September 2012. The Japanese two wheeler company registered more than five thousand bookings during first week of launch. Let’s take a look at what this scooter offers.

    Style

The scooter is specifically designed to target college girls and young women, but it attracts male buyers as well. Scooter’s sporty and dynamic design makes it attractive, and one of the best looking scooters in India. Ray’s instrument panel is simple. It consists of indicator lamps for turn-signal and high beam, along with fuel gauge and analogue speedometer.

The scooter’s front face is V shaped. Headlight and turning indicators are perfectly integrated in the scooter’s front. The storage space in-front of foot space is good enough to keep water bottle, purse, etc. You can also hang your bags on the hook near foot space.

Ray looks spectacular during evening due to its sparkling taillights. Scooter’s seat looks good enough. The grab-bar ensures that even pillion passenger feels comfortable while traveling. Under seat storage is 15.5 liters. You can keep your shopping bags, or even small, half-face helmet. The scooter’s weight is 104 KGS, and ground clearance is 128 MM. Ray offers both, electric and kick start option.

This gearless scooter’s standard variant is available in colors like starry white, plush pink, black star, shining blue, burgundy bliss, grey grandeur.

    Engine

Yamaha has fitted 113cc air-cooled engine in this scooter. The scooter maker claims that this vehicle can offer mileage of 57 KMPL, but user reviews suggest mileage of around 43 KMPL. Ray can reach from 0 to 60 KMPH in just 10.84 seconds. This gearless scooter’s fuel tank can store five liters of petrol. Reserve indicator starts blinking when sensors detect just one liter or lesser amount of fuel in the tank.

    Suspension and braking system

The telescopic fork suspension in the front and unit swing suspension unit in the rear offer perfect suspension while on city roads, as well as on highways. Drum brake in the front and rear are good enough to control the vehicle while skipping through lanes full of traffic.

    Competitors

Almost every India scooter’s first competition is against Honda’s Activa which controls more than 50 percent market share in scooter market.

Light weight and low seat height help Yamaha’s scooter to compete against Activa. In-fact, certain bike experts rate Ray as better scooter than Activa. Ray not only looks better, but also offers refined ride. Activa’s foot board is bit-wider compared to that of Ray. On the other hand, Ray vibrates less than Activa, and also offers better ride on highways than Honda.

Even when compared with TVS Wego, Ray offers better ride due to its suspension.

    Precious edition

Yamaha launched limited precious edition with pink colored graphics on black background during 2013. This edition was launched during Ponds Femina Miss India 2013 fever. If you are looking for scooter with girlish graphics, and wish to avoid TVS Scooty, you should definitely visit your nearest dealer to inquire about Ray scooter’s precious edition.

    Z variant

Yamaha launched Ray Z in July 2013. This variant offers male friendly graphics, black colored steel wheels, and rear grab rail with aluminum wing. Technical specifications including engine stats remain the same. The Z variant costs Rs 1750 more than standard variant. Ray’s standard variant is available for around Rs 46,000 plus taxes.

    Recall in 2013

Yamaha attracted a lot of attention in July 2013 when the Japanese two wheeler maker recalled around 56,000 Ray scooters to solve handlebar related issues. The company had issued a statement that this recall was declared after finding handlebar’s insufficient strength in certain scooters. The company started its campaign called “Ray Refresh Campaign” throughout its dealership networks and replaced handlebars of all the affected scooters for free.
