    Regardless of income & social status, the popularity of motorcycles in India is as good as bicycles in Scandinavian countries. Indians are, in fact, admirers of how they move around. As of now, India is one of the leading global motorcycle manufacturers. Of the 53 million units of motorcycles produced each year across the world, India alone accounts for almost 20 million motorbikes. And this abundance is most likely to grow over the decade at least.

    Hero MotoCorp

    Hero MotoCorp LogoBased in New Delhi, Hero MotoCorp is one of the largest motorbike manufacturers in the world. It is one of the biggest motorcycle brands in India. Almost 50 percent of all motorcycles sold in India are made by Hero. Hero built over 7.5 million motorbikes in 2018. Originally an Indian bicycle manufacturer Hero MotoCorp started in 1984 as a joint venture between them and the big motorcycle Honda.

    For many years they were known as Hero Honda. The company effectively used the well-proven Honda technology to produce simple small-capacity machines for the Indian market. Subsequently, Hero severed ties with Honda in 2011. They then purchased a stake in Erik Buell Racing in 2014 to export products to the USA. The current Hero line-up consists of sub-200cc machines sold all around the world.

    TVS Motor Company

    TVS Motor Company logoThese are the new owners of the world-famous Norton brand. With annual sales of three million motorbikes, TVS, the 42-year-old Chennai-based company, is no stranger to making motorcycles.

    TVS brand, as of now, is involved in a partnership with the German BMW Motorrad to manufacture the G 310 models in India. The TVS Apache RR 310 is a miniature superbike that is top of a range machine manufactured by this company. It uses the BMW’s 312cc single-cylinder engine at its heart. With its model range, TVS says that Norton in the UK will remain a separate company. Likely, they will not share technology and marketing power between the two brands in the coming days.

The ‘Bullet’ motorcycle has been the most popular product of this company from the start. It is still in production and enjoys the longest motorbike production run.     Yamaha Motor India

    Yamaha Motor India logoYamaha initially entered the Indian motorcycle market in 1985 through a joint venture. It became a 100 percent Japanese Yamaha Motor Company (YMC) subsidiary. Subsequently, YMC agreed to be an everyday investor with Mitsui & Co. Ltd. Japan in 2008. The amalgamate emerged as the India Yamaha Motor (IYM) Private Limited. IYM today is one of the finest motorcycle producers, with manufacturing units in Faridabad, Haryana, and Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh. These units effectively support the production of motorcycles, its part, and accessories for domestic and international markets.

    With over 500 dealers and 1200 customer touchpoints, IYM captures about 3.7 percent of the Indian two-wheeler market. Some of the popular motorbike models of IYM include the Yamaha MT 15 V2, the Yamaha R15 V4, and the Yamaha R15S.

    With over 3000 employees and operating revenue of over 500 crores INR involved in the production, SMI commands a sizable 3.2 percent share of the total Indian market.     Mahindra Two Wheelers

The company’s recognition comes from participation in Moto3 racing between 2011 and 2017. Found mainly in the shadow of Honda and KTM at the event, Mahindra Motorcycles managed a handful of achievements in 2015, alongside three more gains in the year 2016 as well.

    Standard models of Mahindra motorcycles are primary machines designed for everyday transport in the home market. They have more upmarket offerings under quite a few conventional brand names abroad. Surprisingly, Mahindra wholly owns the French Peugeot Motorcycles brand as well. The 2016 Grand Prix title comes on a Mahindra machine branded as a Peugeot. Mahindra also owns the Jawa and BSA brands which are all set to bring about a revival shortly.

    KTM India

    KTM India logoFormerly Kronreif & Trunkenpolz Mattighofen (KTM), Sport Motorcycle AG is an Austrian motorcycle brand manufactured by Pierer Mobility AG. KTM India collaborated with the Indian manufacturer Bajaj Auto to acquire the new identity in 1992. KTM AG today is the parent company of the KTM Group. It consists of several motorcycle brands in the fray.

    KTM is reputed for its enduro, motocross, and supermoto off-road motorcycles since the latter half of 1990. After which it has expanded into street motorcycle production. Eventually, KTM sold almost as many street motorcycles as off-road motorbikes in 2015. It also was the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Europe for four consecutive years from 2012 onwards. KTM is said to have sold 203,423 motorbikes worldwide in 2016.

    BMW Motorrad India

The only exception is the G310 series motorbikes produced at the TVS India plant in Tamil Nadu, The BMW G 310 R is an entry-level standard motorcycle. It is developed jointly by BMW and TVS Motor Company of India. This first modern, low-end, sub-300 cc BMW beginner motorcycle is sold under the original Motorrad India brand. With global sales beginning in 2018, it entered the global market at the fag-end of 2015.

    Force Motors make BMW engines in India. They have a dedicated state-of-the-art facility located in Chennai. Force Motors, over time, have supplied around 44,000 machines to BMW Motorrad India. BMW Motorrad India created a new milestone of success in 2022 when the company sold 7,282 motorcycles.

    The Indian motorcycle market witnessed a dip in sales during the peak of the COVID pandemic, which affected all manufacturers. Nevertheless, Hero MotoCorp and TVS Motor Company regained their positions as top bike brands in 2022.

    Both these motorcycle entities have prioritized strengthening their distribution networks alongside enhancing customer satisfaction. As a result, they are now well settled back again and have made their mark as the leading brands in the Indian two-wheeler automobile industry.
